Feel free to listen to a few electronic music experiments I’ve done during the years.
Apart from plinking around with my paren’t piano as a five year old, I think the first time I actually tried to compose anything myself was when I bought myself an Amiga 500. This was around 1989, and a brave new world opened itself with digital samples, tracker software (and cool copy parties).
Before the A500, I did try to understand how music composing was made on a Commodore 64, but never really understood the way to achieve music on the brown breadbox. Unable to create native Commodore 64 tunes, I have however created a number of remixes of old C64 gametunes. If you’re into old 8-bit SID-music, steer away to remix.kwed.org and download my songs.
With the Amiga however, it was a breeze to use tracker software like Noisetracker, Protracker etc to create music. I made many many .mod-tunes, of which you can listen to ‘The Final Housemyx” in mp3-format here. Should you want to download the original .mod-file, just steer your browser here. (Fun fact of the day: The ‘”AJ!”-sound in the song was sampled from a CD with Micke “Svullo” Dubois by me with my AMAS-sampler.)
Some years later I put the trusty Amiga in a box and stored it away in the basement, and no music was composed until late 1998 when I installed a borrowed copy of Cubase VST on my mac. Now, the sound of noisy 8-bit sampled was history and I realised that hi-quality audio was possible (by either software synths or plug-ins). The problem was that I didn’t own a keyboard to actually play anything. The first year or so I struggled with the pencil tool inside Cubase, trying to make chords, importing audio files etc. The tunes made back then wasn’t really anything anyone would call ‘songs’.
Then, I managed to hook up a copy of Propellerhead’s ReBirth through ReWire to Cubase and make acidesque soundforms with beats on top. A small step toward.. err… getting there. It was around this time I made my first stumbling attempts in making a Commodore 64-remix.
In the year of 2000 I finally decided to buy myself a synth, so an Alesis QS 6.1 was purchased. Now, things were gonna be up to speed! So I thought, but never actually got to use the internal sounds of the synth due to lack of interest and peripherals. A year later or so I finally coughed up the money to buy myself a copy of Propellerheads Reason, and it wasn’t until then I could dive into the world of music making. Through a simple midi interface I could use my synth to control Reason and make tunes. What a wonderful world!
Today, my music setup consist of my Macbook Pro, a Yamaha GO46 audio interface, a Novation Remote LE 61-key midi controller, Reason & Logic Studio Pro. I do also own a rarely used Samson C01 microphone.
Music creation for me is just something to do when wanting to get away from the evil world of deadlines, demanding job customers or anything else that’s annoying me. I guess you can call it my little waterhole in life. I don’t want the music I make to be anything but fun while doing it, but should anyone else that listen to a song think good of it – that’s just absolutely great.
So there. A small something about me and music =)
